A field of about 1,700 professional and amateur triathletes are expected to compete in the fifth Orange County Performing Arts Center Triathlon Sunday.

The race will begin at 7 a.m. with a 1.5-kilometer swim in Lake Mission Viejo. The swim will be followed by a 40K bicycle race over a course that includes parts of the route that Olympic cyclists competed on in 1984. The third leg will be a 10K run through the hills of Mission Viejo.

Scott Tinley, defending champion and a four-time winner of the event, will compete, as will 1988 winner Andrew McNaughton and last year’s second-place finisher, Emilio De Soto.

The field of professionals will include Bill Leach, Brad Kearns, Peter Kain, Thomas Gallagher, Todd Jacobs and Tony Richardson.

Laurie Samuelson, winner of the women’s pro division last year, will be challenged by 1988 winner Colleen Cannon and Melissa Mantak, who finished third in ’89.

The professional triathletes will be competing for more than $11,000 in prize money.
