Planning Panels Backs Proposed Beach Hotel

Share

A proposed beachfront luxury hotel and community center on the site of the private Sand and Sea Club on Pacific Coast Highway cleared another major hurdle when the Santa Monica Planning Commission voted to recommend that the City Council approve the project.

The commission discussed the proposal for nearly seven hours before casting its vote about 2:30 a.m. Thursday. The City Council is scheduled to review restaurateur Michael McCarty’s proposal for the 160-room hotel and three-story community center on June 19. If approved by the council, it would then go to the state Coastal Commission, probably in late summer.

The 4.9-acre parcel is owned by the state and managed by the city.
