A Los Angeles police officer who was struck by a car Saturday in Sherman Oaks after attempting to arrest the driver fired three shots at the vehicle, but the driver escaped, authorities said.

The officer, a 16-year-veteran whose name was not released, was not injured.

The officer had stopped two suspected jaywalkers crossing Ventura Boulevard west of Van Nuys Boulevard when he noticed that one of them was wanted in connection with a previous jaywalking incident, Sgt. Mel Cunningham said. When the officer tried to arrest the man, he ran toward a parked car, got in and drove off, striking the officer.
