One northbound lane of the Antelope Valley Freeway will be closed at night for several weeks while crews widen a 1 1/2-mile section of the roadway to relieve a chronic bottleneck near Sand Canyon Road in the Santa Clarita Valley.

Work on the first phase of the $852,000-project, which will add a third lane to the freeway between Sand Canyon Road and the Santa Clara River, began Monday night.

One lane of the roadway will be closed from 9 p.m. to 7 a.m. during the first few weeks of construction and again near the end of the project, which is expected to last two months, a Caltrans spokesman said.

The second phase of the project, to be completed in 1991, will add a third lane to the southbound section of the freeway. The California Department of Transportation, Los Angeles County and the cities of Santa Clarita and Palmdale are sharing the cost of the work.
