The bodies of two men who had been shot in the head were found early Wednesday by U.S. Border Patrol agents about half a mile from where a man was shot late Tuesday, San Diego police said.

The two slain men, who were Latino and appeared to be in their 20s, had not yet been identified. Their bodies were found on a hillside west of a gravel pit that is half a mile south of the intersection of Monument and Dairy Mart roads, near the U.S.-Mexico border fence.

Police spokesman Bill Robinson said authorities did not know whether the slayings were related to a shooting that occurred shortly after 11 p.m. Tuesday on Monument Road.

Carlos Suarez-Gomez, 28, was shot in the back and is in fair condition at UC San Diego Medical Center, a hospital spokeswoman said. He has a gunshot wound to the right shoulder and right flank.

According to Robinson, Suarez-Gomez and an unknown number of companions were illegally crossing the border when they were approached by another group, who police say were robbers. Suarez-Gomez was hit in the back when a man in the other group opened fire, Robinson said.

Sgt. Cheryl Meyers of the Police Department’s homicide unit said officers are not sure whether the two slain men were undocumented immigrants.
