SAN DIEGO SPORTS ET CETERA : Aztec Pitchers Petersen, Nielsen Sign With St. Louis

San Diego State pitchers Andy Petersen and Kevin Nielsen have signed contracts with St. Louis after the Cardinals picked them in the major league free agent draft this week.

Petersen (10-2, 2.80 earned-run average in 1990) was a co-winner of SDSU’s most valuable pitcher award. Nielsen was 4-4 with 4.81 ERA.

Seven SDSU players have been drafted. Already signed are catcher Eric Christopherson (San Francisco), pitcher Kurt Archer (Milwaukee), outfielder Jeff Barry (Montreal), and pitcher Rusty Filter (Toronto). Pitcher Erik Plantenberg has reached a verbal agreement with Boston and is expected to sign on Monday.

UC San Diego’s Erik Judson, a senior shortstop who hit .300 and led the team in stolen bases this past season, was notified that he had been drafted by the Philadelphia Phillies, but he had not yet been contacted concerning a possible contract.

GOLF

Defending champion Phil Mickelson, a USDHS graduate from Arizona State, shot a four-under-par 68 to pull within four shots of the lead at the NCAA Division I men’s championships at Innisbrook in Tarpon Springs, Fla.

Mickelson is one of six players tied a one-under 143 after two rounds. Florida’s Jeff Barlow remained the individual leader at 139 with a 71 Friday.

HIGH SCHOOLS

La Jolla Country Day named Daryl Ravani director of athletics and physical education, replacing Patrick Murphy, who will become vice principal at Santa Ana Mater Dei. Ravani, currently athletic director at Allendale-Columbia School in Rochester, N.Y., will take over July 1.
