College Honors Irvine Resident

Irvine resident Carolyn D. Beaver, who was the first female graduate of Cal Poly Pomona to became a Big Eight accounting firm partner, was named 1990 Distinguished Alumnus from the Cal Poly Pomona College of Business Administration.

A 1978 graduate, Beaver took only nine years to reach that goal after working as an accounting professional for the firm of KPMG Peat Marwick.

Besides her work, she is treasurer of the Orange County Girl Scouts Council, is past president and current treasurer of Friends of Santa Ana Zoo and was vice chairman of the 1989 Orange County Performing Arts Center Triathlon.

Feryne Margolin, vice president of the Jewish Senior Center of Orange County, has been named Woman of the Year by the sisterhood at Temple Bat Yahm in Newport Beach for her longtime community service. She is also vice president of the Jewish Federation of Orange County.

Irvine resident Gary M. Litton, a part-time research assistant at UC Irvine pursuing a doctorate in civil engineering, was awarded the $3,000 Clair A. Hill Scholarship for water-related studies.

“We feel that when Litton completes his studies he will make a valuable contribution to the field of water resources and environmental engineering, said Peer Swan, board president of Irvine Ranch Water District.

Swan presented the award, named in honor of the founder of the engineering firm CH2M Hill, at a conference of the Assn. of California Water Agencies.

John E. Davis, son of Dorothy and William Davis of San Clemente, was named Outstanding Senior of San Francisco State University’s School of Creative Arts.

The O’Neill Elementary School in Mission Viejo won the recent Orange County Sixth-Grade Academic Pentathlon, which drew 50 schools that competed in five subject areas.

Team members were Lauren Oater, Karen Reisdorf, Andrew Ting, David Schmidt, Brian Stones, Kyle Young, Matt Cox, Don Flanigan and Jacob Sutton. Teacher coaches were Barbara Archer and Carol Maxwell.

“It was a lot of work. There was so much to study, but it was definitely worth it,” said Reisdorf.

Julie Lewcyzk, a sophomore at Troy High School in Fullerton, was selected to spend 17 days in Japan as a delegate from the United States to Sony Corp.’s “Student Abroad” program.

She was one of two California students picked in a national competition that saw a total of 22 students chosen on the basis of citizenship and academic records.

She will leave July 7 to study Japanese technology and will live with Sony employees.

Milt Johns, landscape director for Professional Community Management at Laguna Hills Leisure World, was honored at a recent awards program for outstanding individual professional accomplishments in ground maintenance by the Professional Grounds Management Society. He is a resident of Laguna Niguel.

Michael Ray, a junior at San Clemente High School, has been accepted into the prestigious eight-week High School Scholars Summer School Program at Harvard University to study the Russian language.

Gia Crecelius, a graduate of Mater Dei High School in Santa Ana, has been named Miss Teen All American in Colorado. She will compete in the July 12-15 national Miss Teen All American pageant in Miami.

Crecelius, the daughter of Anahid and Daniel Crecelius of Fountain Valley, just completed her junior year at Colorado College in Colorado Springs.
