A pickup truck traveling on the Costa Mesa Freeway early today was riddled with gunfire from another vehicle for no apparent reason, California Highway Patrol officials reported.

The driver of the truck, Sinarta Bangun, 28, of Anaheim was not injured in the 2:15 a.m. attack on the southbound Costa Mesa Freeway just north of the Garden Grove Freeway.

Bangun’s truck was struck five times, with three bullets striking the rear tailgate, another bullet hitting the right side of the cab and the fifth round slamming through the rear window, missing the driver by about an inch, CHP spokeswoman Angel Johnson said.

Bangun was unable to provide officers with a description of the vehicle, nor an explanation on why the shooting might have happened. Angel said Bangun told police only that the rifle shots were fired from a vehicle behind him and that “he couldn’t see anything.”

The case has been turned over to the Orange County Sheriff’s Department for investigation.
