Mabel M. Scothorn, who co-owned and operated a jewelry store in Long Beach with her husband for 30 years, died in Canoga Park five days short of her 108th birthday.

Mrs. Scothorn died June 4 of natural causes, said her cousin, June Killingsworth.

Born Mabel M. Willey on June 9, 1882, in Des Moines, Iowa, she married Elzie (Scott) Scothorn in the 1920s. They later moved west to Ely, Nev., where they lived for a short time before settling in Long Beach in 1930.

The couple owned Scothorn Jewelry from 1930 to the early 1960s. Every week, Mrs. Scothorn, who never learned to drive, traveled to downtown Los Angeles in a Red Car trolley to buy jewelry from wholesale outlets.

Following the March 10, 1933, earthquake in Long Beach that shattered the store’s windows, the couple spent a week in the front yard of a friend’s house in Whittier before returning in Long Beach, said her cousin.

In 1972, five years after her husband died, she fell getting out of bed and was not expected to live longer than a few weeks. She moved to a convalescent home in Canoga Park, where she lived until her death.

Mrs. Scothorn is survived by several cousins.

Funeral services are pending. Forest Lawn-Glendale is handling the arrangements. She will be buried in Long Beach.
