Wintry Surrealism

Anyone who can think up “Two Birds Watching Doris Day’s Cat and Dog Drown” has got to be nimble-witted--and Jonathan Winters certainly is. His comedy leaves fans roaring with laughter. But beyond stage, film and television, Winters has found a means of expression. For years, he has applied a surrealistic wit to canvas, painting satirical themes in acrylics, using bold, contrasting colors and playful titles.
It has been said his work is hard to label. “Pathetic Black Moon With Awful Vase With Dead Flowers In It” seems to say it all--doesn’t it?
Through July 22, the Carnegie Art Museum will feature the work of the author-artist-comedian in an exhibit titled “The Art of Jonathan Winters.”
The public is invited to a reception from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday.
The museum is at 424 South C St., Oxnard. Gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday and Friday; 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Call 984-4649.
