Culver City : Water-Saving Measures

Hosing down sidewalks, serving an unrequested glass of water in a restaurant, watering a lawn at midday and other wasteful uses of water were outlawed Monday by the City Council.

The emergency water conservation requirements, which passed on a 4-0 vote, with Councilman Jim Boulgarides absent, were prompted by a request from the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California, which warned in March that the state is entering its fourth consecutive year of drought conditions, according to City Engineer Jim Davis.

“We’re not critically short at this point,” he said. “There’s a need to conserve, but the concern is more for next year.”

The ordinance, which went into effect immediately, also bans the washing of vehicles with a running hose, using nonrecycling decorative fountains, ponds or lakes, leaky pipes, allowing water to run off over-watered yards, and watering lawns or gardens more often than every other day.

The ordinance will be enforced by Fire Department officials, who will issue citations backed by fines of up to $1,000, Davis said.
