Early Clouds, Cool Temperatures Predicted Over the Weekend

Just when tens of thousands of school-weary students start thinking about spending all day at their favorite Southern California beach, June comes along with its typical night and morning low cloudiness, tardy afternoon sunshine and coolish temperatures.

And that’s what beach-goers can expect over the weekend, according to meteorologist Steve Burback of WeatherData Inc., which provides forecasts for The Times.

“June gets most clouds on the average, but virtually no rain,” Burback said. “The average for June is less than a tenth of an inch.”

What normally happens this month, Burback said, is that high pressure over the Pacific creates an onshore flow of marine air, often producing drizzle and fog along the coastal slopes.

Some early risers reported that it was “spitting” when they got up Thursday.

So, for those who want lots of sunshine and warm temperatures this weekend--albeit with gusty winds in the afternoons--the best bet probably is the deserts, where Burback expects clear skies throughout the day with highs in the 80s to 90s and a “couple of hundreds.”

Otherwise, Burback predicts that highs along the coast will range in the mid-60s and climb to the mid-70s in sheltered spots.

Thursday’s high at the Los Angeles Civic Center was 72 degrees--pretty typical for this time of year, it seems.
