SOUTHLAND : Judge Won’t Delay Remap Order
A federal judge who ruled that Los Angeles County’s supervisor district boundaries discriminate against Latinos today refused to put on hold his order that the lines be redrawn by June 27.
No Latino has been elected to the board in this century, despite the fact that 3 million of its 8.5 million residents are Latino. U.S. District Judge David Kenyon ruled last week that the five supervisors, all Anglos, intentionally redrew the districts in 1981 to exclude Latinos.
Kenyon today rejected County Atty. John McDermott’s request to stay the order to redraw the lines so the county could immediately appeal Kenyon’s order to the U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeal. McDermott said he will go directly to the appeals court Monday to try to get a hearing.
