A veteran school district police officer was struck and critically injured by a car driven by a reputed gang member as the officer was attempting to break up a fight between gang members outside Huntington Park High School Friday afternoon, authorities said.
The 42-year-old officer, who has served with the district’s police for more than 10 years, was in Martin Luther King Jr./Drew Medical Center with extensive head and internal injuries and a fractured leg, Sgt. Roman Fromm of the school police said. His name was not released pending notification of relatives.
“He was breaking up a fight between about a half-dozen gang members when two of them jumped in a car and ran right over him,” Fromm said.
Huntington Park police Sgt. Ron Beason said: “We’re talking to every witness we can find along with the school police” to try to identify and find the attackers.
