Share

The battle between Bobby Schwartz and Steve Lucero continued, but Mike Faria of Colton won the four-lap scratch main event Friday in the weekly speedway program at the Orange County Fairgrounds in Costa Mesa.

In their fifth altercation in eight weeks, Schwartz of Costa Mesa drove Lucero of Riverside into the wall on the fourth turn of the first lap and was disqualified. After the re-start, Lucero was disqualified when he drove Faria into the wall on the first turn of the second lap. Faria defeated his only remaining competitor, Phil Collins, when the race was started for the third time.

Lucero had won the past three scratch main events, but the race promoter said Lucero, the 1988 U.S. champion, will not be on next week’s program.
