SUMMER BASEBALL ROUNDUP : Hiljus Records 16 Strikeouts in Newhall Win

Erik Hiljus, a 6-foot-5, 210-pound right-hander, struck out 16 and scattered five hits Saturday to lift Newhall-Saugus over Chatsworth, 12-5, in an American Legion District 20 baseball game at Saugus High.

Hiljus (2-1), whose fastball has been clocked at 85 m.p.h., broke the team’s single-game strikeout record of 14 set by Roger Salkeld in 1988. Hiljus, a senior-to-be at Canyon High, struck out the side in the ninth to set the mark.

Aided by six walks and three hits, Newhall-Saugus (4-4) built an eight-run lead in the first. Chatsworth (2-4) committed four errors.

Jeff Albert of Newhall-Saugus had two hits to improve his batting average to .450.

In other baseball games:

Lancaster 8, Las Virgenes 0--Kevin Branch allowed four hits in seven innings and David Cook and Heath Fine each went three for four with two runs batted in to lead host Lancaster (5-2-1) in a District 20 game.

Branch (3-0), a right-hander who struck out four and walked four, has thrown 14 consecutive scoreless innings.

Woodland Hills East 5, Glendale 4--Benji Belfield’s bases-loaded single with no out in the bottom of the ninth provided Woodland Hills East (7-1) with the District 20 victory. Belfield was two for four with a double and two RBIs.

Valley ET 12, Agoura 11--Valley Encino-Tarzana staved off a six-run Agoura rally in the ninth to salvage a District 20 victory at Agoura.

Justin Bass was three for six, drove in three runs and scored twice for Valley ET (4-4).

Jason Warren led Agoura (5-5) with three hits and three RBIs. Teammate Jason Kane had a three-run triple.

North Hollywood 9, Palmdale 6--Pitcher Cassidy Pope scattered six hits and had two hits, including a home run, to pace North Hollywood to its first victory in a District 20 game at Palmdale.

Harry Marks went three for four with three RBIs for North Hollywood (1-6).

Sun Valley 4, West Hills 2--Mike Andry and Doug Kreider had two hits in a losing effort for West Hills in a District 20 game at Chaminade.

GOODMAN COLLEGIATE LEAGUE

Valley Rangers 12-1, California Cubs 0-2--The Rangers’ Cort Wright tossed a one-hitter in the opener, allowing only Terry Bauer’s one-out single in the bottom of the seventh inning, and struck out 10 at Birmingham High.

Chris Kaelin was three for three with two doubles and Chris Vargas hit a three-run home run, his second, to lead the Rangers in the opener.

Steve Savage drove in both Cub runs in the second game.
