Bob Gainey, former Montreal Canadien captain, was hired as coach of the Minnesota North Stars.

Gainey, 36, is the 16th coach in the organization’s 23-year history. He spent 1989-90 as a player-coach in France but otherwise has no coaching experience.

In 16 years with the Canadiens, Gainey had 239 goals and 262 assists. A left wing, he was voted the NHL’s top defensive forward four times and was the most valuable player in the Stanley Cup in 1979.
