Protesting Janitors File Claim Against Police

Janitors who tangled with police during a demonstration in Century City last week filed a $10-million claim Wednesday against the Police Department and the city of Los Angeles, officials said.

“I’ve never seen such a brutal attack,” said Dan Stormer, a lawyer for the Service Employees International Union. “It’s phenomenal. You can’t believe what happened. It’s like feudal lords protecting their kingdom and the police were their feudal knights.”

More than 300 demonstrators were marching Friday when they clashed with police in riot gear. Thirty-eight protesters were arrested and about 60 were injured.

Officer Don Lawrence said the department could not comment because of the claim and a possible lawsuit.

The city has 45 days to respond to the damage claim. If it is rejected, the union can proceed with a lawsuit.
