A 4-year-old boy was crushed to death when he fell off a tractor at a construction site in Lancaster and was run over as his mother watched, the Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies reported Thursday.

Shawn Sconce of the Stockton area was killed at 8:50 p.m. Wednesday at a construction site in the 3000 block of Lancaster Boulevard, Sgt. Joseph Dymerski said. The names of the victim’s mother and his 5-year-old brother, who was also riding on the four-wheel front loader, were not released.

Deputies said the tractor was being driven by a family friend, Kenneth Hulse, 26, of Lancaster, who is an employee at the site. The tractor went down a small embankment and Shawn was jarred loose from his seat next to Hulse.

“They just hit a little bump and he was off,” Dymerski said.

The other brother did not fall. Shawn was run over by one of the tractor’s large rear wheels. His mother, who was standing nearby the accident site, drove her child to Antelope Valley Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead about 9 p.m.

Dymerski said the accident is under investigation, but that Hulse did not break any laws.
