Shot putter Mike Stulce has been suspended for two years after testing positive for high testosterone levels, The Athletics Congress announced today.

Stulce, 22, a junior at Texas A&M;, is the first athlete to test positive under TAC’s year-round, out-of-competition drug-testing program, which began in October.

Stulce, the 1988 and 1989 NCAA shot put champion, was randomly selected for testing during the week of March 19. On April 5, TAC, the national governing body for track and field, was informed that Stulce’s testosterone-epitestosterone ratio was higher than the prescribed limit of 6 to 1.

Under TAC’s year-round, out-of-competition testing protocol, Stulce was given the two-year suspension.

Stulce has appealed the finding. A three-member panel of TAC’s Drug Control Review Board will hear Stulce’s appeal. No date has been set for the hearing.

Stulce also won his second straight NCAA indoor shot put title in March, but was declared ineligible by the NCAA on April 12 for violating eligibility rules.

In 1988, Stulce was the U.S. junior shot put champion.
