A masked man armed with a semiautomatic pistol hijacked a pickup, shot at the truck’s owner and outran police before escaping across the Mexican border, police said.

John Huss of San Diego was driving home from the Lucky Food Center at 4302 University Ave. about 2 a.m. Thursday when a man wearing a dark jacket and a red ski mask pointed the pistol at Huss’ neck, said San Diego police spokesman Bill Robinson.

“The suspect apparently had broken into the truck and was hiding in the camper shell,” Robinson said.

Huss jumped out of the truck and ran.

The hijacker fired two shots at Huss, missing both times, before driving away in the truck, Robinson said.

Huss then reported the incident to police, and officers in a patrol car spotted the truck driving on 40th Street a few minutes later and chased it, Robinson said.

The chase continued south on interstate highways 15 and 5 until the hijacker escaped into Mexico, Robinson said.
