Top-fuel drag racer Don Prudhomme of Granada...

Top-fuel drag racer Don Prudhomme of Granada Hills escaped injury when his dragster was involved in an accident during qualifying for the NHRA Le Grandnational Molson at Sanair International Dragstrip near Quebec.

Prudhomme was making his final qualifying attempt when the front end of his dragster rose, causing it to flip over.

The accident was Prudhomme’s third since the Winston funny-car champion made the switch to top fuel at the conclusion of the 1989 season.

The top qualifiers were Joe Amato (top fuel), Bruce Larson (funny car) and Jerry Eckman (pro stock), all of whom set track records. Amato’s elapsed time was 5.084 seconds with a speed of 272.80 m.p.h; Larson’s was 5.382 with a speed of 266.19 m.p.h.; and Eckman, of Ventura, had a time of 7.332 and a speed of 188.00 m.p.h.
