Former Judge Robert J. Cooney Dies at 62
Former San Diego Municipal Judge Robert J. Cooney died Monday of complications related to diabetes. He was 62.
Cooney was on the Municipal Court bench 21 years, and twice was the court’s presiding judge. Appointed to the bench in 1968 by Gov. Ronald Reagan, Cooney was returned to his post four times by voters before retiring in April, 1989.
After retiring, Cooney moved to Julian with his wife, Sharron, who once served as his court clerk.
The court’s current presiding judge, E. Mac Amos Jr., called Cooney’s death “very sad.” Court administrator D. Kent Pedersen, who said he felt “very, very bad,” added that Cooney “was held in the utmost respect.”
Services were scheduled for Friday at Santa Sophia Catholic Church in Spring Valley.
