THE SIDELINES : Schayes-Mills Swap Discussed

The Denver Nuggets confirmed Thursday that they have discussed trading veteran center Danny Schayes to the Milwaukee Bucks for first-round draft pick Terry Mills.

The deal can’t be consummated, however, because the Bucks aren’t able to fit Schayes’ contract under the NBA salary cap.

If the deal is made, it will have to wait until Aug. 1, when the cap increases by more than $1 million per team.

“There have been conversations,” Nuggets President Carl Scheer said. “We’re talking.”

Milwaukee Coach Del Harris surprised reporters Wednesday night by saying the Bucks would probably be trading Mills, who was the 16th player selected in the NBA draft. Mills, a 6-foot-10, 230-pound forward from Michigan, averaged 18.1 points and 8.0 rebounds last season.

The Milwaukee Journal reported the Mills-for-Schayes trade talk in its Thursday editions.

“I’ve talked to Milwaukee, and he’s definitely going to be traded, but we don’t know where,” said Randy Vataha, agent for Mills and associate of agent Bob Woolf, Schayes’ agent.

Harris said the Bucks had talked to several teams but refused to name them.
