PREVIOUS NO-HITTERS

THIS SEASON: The other 1990 no-hitters were by the Angels’ Mark Langston (seven innings) and Mike Witt (two) against the Seattle Mariners April 11; by Seattle’s Randy Johnson against the Detroit Tigers June 2; and Nolan Ryan of the Texas Rangers against Oakland June 11.

SAME DAY: On May 2, 1917, at Chicago, Fred Toney of Cincinnati and James (Hippo) Vaughn of the Cubs pitched no-hitters in the same day, with Toney and the Reds beating Vaughn and the Cubs, 1-0, in 10 innings. The previous time no-hitters were pitched on the same day in different games was April 22, 1898, by Ted Brietenstein of Cincinnati against Pittsburgh, and Jim Hughes of Baltimore against the Boston Braves.

SAME MONTH: The last time there were four no-hitters in one month was in May of 1917, all within five days. On May 2, the Toney-Vaughn double no-hitter was pitched. Three days later, Ernie Koob of the St. Louis Browns pitched a no-hitter against the Chicago White Sox. The next day Bob Groom, also of the Browns, repeated against the White Sox.
