San Diego firefighters evacuated the Marriott Hotel in Mission Valley early Saturday after a small fire apparently began in a plastic potted plant, authorities said.

No one was hurt in the incident, which occurred about 9 a.m.

The blaze was apparently caused by a lit cigarette that had been placed in a plant pot on the second floor, alongside the guest elevators, authorities said.

The fire was extinguished in moments, authorities said, but smoke from the blaze spread via the elevator shafts throughout the hotel. Firefighters decided to temporarily evacuate the 350-room structure.
