Union, Shippers Reach Tentative Accord on Contract
Negotiators for West Coast dockworkers and employers reached a tentative agreement on new three-year contracts for 9,000 longshoremen and marine clerks from San Diego to Bellingham, Wash. Details were not released, but officials said the agreement would enhance wages, health benefits and job security of International Longshoremen’s and Warehousemen’s Union workers.
“I think it will be viewed as a reasonable settlement that protects the interests of both parties,” said Terry Lane, vice president of labor relations for the Pacific Maritime Assn., representing 100 shippers and other waterfront employers.
Ratification is expected within the next two weeks. Under the last contract, the base hourly salary of dockworkers was $20.33.
