Gunman Shoots Officer in Leg During Chase
A gunman who had just robbed a Hawthorne shoe store shot a plainclothes police officer in the leg during a chase Thursday before officers shot the suspect, authorities said.
The officer, whose name was withheld, was in stable condition at Robert F. Kennedy Medical Center, while the gunman was recovering from “an undetermined number of bullet wounds” in the jail ward at County-USC Hospital.
“The suspect told me, ‘Look what I’ve got here,’ and he showed me the gun,” said Adam Wells, the manager of Standard Shoes. “I opened the registers and said, ‘Help yourself.’ ”
Police said the officer was shot as the suspect fled about 2:30 p.m.
