Several people have already announced their candidacy for three seats on the Santa Paula City Council.

The filing period begins July 16 and ends Aug. 10, City Clerk Stacey McDonald said. The deadline will be extended to Aug. 15 if incumbents do not file.

Robert Borrego, an aide to state Sen. Gary K. Hart (D-Santa Barbara), said he plans to run because “I’ve learned what its citizens want Santa Paula to be in the future.” Borrego, a native of the city, has served on the Planning Commission.

Two council members whose terms expire this year have not yet announced whether they will seek reelection.

John Melton, a 16-year veteran of the council, said he will run. His goal is to “see the city develop in a proper way, maintaining the quality of life in a hometown atmosphere.”

Mayor Kay Wilson, who has served one four-year term, is not certain whether she will seek reelection.

“When I decided to run for council member originally, I did so because I felt they needed a fresh face,” Wilson said. “I still feel that way, and it will weigh heavily on my decision.”

Eight-year Councilman Carl Barringer said he is unsure of his plans.
