James Karl Allison Jr., director of planning and development for the Spoleto Festival U.S.A. and a former Broadway producer, has died in Perugia, Italy. He was 42.

Allison suffered a cerebral hemorrhage Sunday while in a Spoleto, Italy, hospital visiting a sick member of the festival orchestra, festival spokesman Tom Kerrigan announced in New York. Allison was taken to a hospital in Perugia and died Wednesday.

Allison, who was known as Karl, joined the board of directors of Spoleto Festival U.S.A. in Charleston, S.C., in 1988, and later took the staff position.

In January, he put together a benefit at New York’s Lincoln Center that raised $321,000 for the festival in the aftermath of Hurricane Hugo.

His credits as a Broadway producer include “Blithe Spirit” with Richard Chamberlain and Geraldine Page, “Wild Honey” with Ian McKellen, “You Can’t Take It With You” with Jason Robards and Colleen Dewhurst, and “Aren’t We All” with Rex Harrison. He produced the long-running off-Broadway hit “Greater Tuna.”
