CSUN Football Trio but Tip of Iceberg

After years of hearing the accolades of (Bruce) Lemmerman, (Gerry) Peters and (Dick) Billingsley (“A Front-Office Scrambler, June 30), I feel it is time someone took issue with this and exposed the feelings of the rest of the team.

Up until 1967, the sacred three could at best account for a 2-7-1 record. After that season Northridge went on a massive recruiting spree with some grant they had received for this purpose. Defensively they brought in a few key people such as linebackers Dennis Richards and Dick Flaherty, backs Bob Mead, Al Racius, Ron Siegel and Bill Fisher. Offensively, they had a field day. In came wide receiver Brian Ashley, easily the equal of (Billingsley and Peters); Ron Curry and Tom Salzman at tackle, as good as any in the conference; three outstanding guards in Joe Prior, Marc Draghi and Doug Hill; at tight end, myself; and running backs Timmy Butler and Billy Irace.

Contrary to your article, we had a well-balanced attack behind the running backs and fullback Mike Vogel, an all-conference selection, and all four receivers. The 1967 Northridge team was a group of great guys and excellent football players who gelled together to form an excellent team. Three individuals is not what this team was all about.
