HIGHS AND LOWS

Share

Regarding the June 8 article about “Arts & Entertainment Revue” by Howard Rosenberg, I too appreciate this meritorious hour, as well as host Eric Burns. Rosenberg’s comment, “Let’s call them ‘high brow,’ ” referring to A&E; and PBS fare, brings a question to my mind. Is it then tacitly understood that all other fare is “low brow,” including some programs, for example, offered by the Discovery Channel?

To me, the use of the adjective “high brow” reveals an unfortunate comment on our society today and its common aversion to any semblance of cerebral awareness, whether in the arts, entertainment or, for that matter, in any area that so much as hints at intelligence or elegance.

I would not have anticipated this myopic label from Rosenberg. Go to your room, Howard!
