THE SIDELINES : Rangers Net 2 Wings in Trades

The New York Rangers acquired right wings Jody Hull from Hartford and Ray Sheppard from Buffalo in a pair of NHL deals made today.

In exchange for Hull, New York sent center Carey Wilson and future considerations to the Whalers. The Rangers paid an undisclosed amount of cash for Sheppard.

Hull, 21, split last season between Hartford and the Whalers’ AHL farm club at Binghamton. He had seven goals and 10 assists in 38 games with Hartford; he was the Whalers’ No. 1 pick in the 1987 entry draft.

Wilson, 28, had nine goals and 17 assists in 41 games with the Rangers last season but missed 39 games because of injuries. He was acquired by New York from Hartford on Dec. 26, 1988, in exchange for Don Maloney, Brian Lawton and Norm Maciver.

Sheppard, 24, scored four goals and two assists in 18 games with Buffalo last season. He was runner-up in Rookie of the Year balloting in 1987-88, when he scored 38 goals.
