The NCAA’s budget subcommittee approved recommendations for distributing $1 billion from a seven-year television contract with CBS that would de-emphasize schools playing tournament games for money.
Under the present arrangement, the farther a team goes in tournament play, the more its school receives from the TV package. Under the new plan, tournament money would be allocated on the basis of a conference or independent team’s performance over a six-year period.
“We want to go back to playing for the trophy, not playing for dollars,” NCAA Executive Director Dick Schultz said.
The NCAA Executive Committee will vote on the proposals at its August meeting and if approved, the measures would take effect the next school year.
The new contract involves some $70 million to $75 million to be shared annually for Division I members, about twice that of past amounts.
Other funds go to Division II and III schools and programs.
