Passenger Killed, Driver Hurt in Crash
One man was killed and another injured when the truck they were driving north on the Antelope Valley Freeway crashed into a truck parked on the highway shoulder near the Sand Canyon exit.
The accident occurred about 1:40 p.m. when 28-year-old Aristides C. Flores of Palmdale fell asleep at the wheel, CHP Officer Barry Hogan said.
Flores and his passenger, Carlos Alberto Barrera, described as in his 20s, were flown by helicopter to Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital, where Barrera died at 5:56 p.m., Hogan said.
Flores remained in the hospital on Thursday night with moderate injuries.
Flores told police that he left Malibu on Thursday morning to haul a load of wood to Palmdale. He said that in Littlerock, he picked up Barrera, a day laborer, to help him with the job, Hogan said.
No charges have been filed against Flores.
