There are no mega-events in store this weekend, but there is plenty of baseball and golf to fill the weekend sports viewing choices.

The Dodgers and San Diego Padres, both beginning the second halves of disappointing seasons, make a combined three television appearances. The Dodgers are in Wrigley Field for games against the Chicago Cubs at 1 p.m. today on cable superstation WGN and Sunday at 11:15 a.m. on WGN and KTTV Channel 11. The Padres meet the Pittsburgh Pirates at 10 a.m. today on Channels 2 and 8.

The most attractive matchup of the weekend has the National League West-leading Cincinnati Reds playing host to baseball’s hottest team, the New York Mets, at 4 p.m. today and 11 a.m. Sunday on cable superstation WWOR.

Two made-for-television golf events are on this weekend’s schedule. Michael Jordan, John Elway, Dan Marino, Phil Simms, Lawrence Taylor and Mike Schmidt lead the field for the inaugural Celebrity Golf Championship, 1 p.m. today and Sunday on Channels 4, 36 and 39. CBS counters with the Norman Golf Challenge, pitting Larry Bird, Wayne Gretzky and Ivan Lendl against Greg Norman. The first nine holes can be seen today at 1:30 p.m. on Channel 2 and at 1 p.m. on Channel 8, with the final nine holes Sunday at 1 p.m. on both stations. Meanwhile, Channels 7, 3, 10 and 42 air the U.S. Women’s Open at 11 a.m. today and 12:30 p.m. Sunday.

Although the National Football League doesn’t begin exhibition play until Aug. 4, there are two televised football games this weekend, both featuring quarterbacks of note. Former Raider Rusty Hilger debuts with the Oklahoma City Twisters in a Minor League Football System game against the Fresno Bandits Sunday at 11 a.m. on FNN. Art Schlichter, an All-American at Ohio State, duels Ben Bennett, once college football’s passing yardage record holder, in an Arena Football game between the Detroit Drive and Dallas Texans, Sunday at 11:30 p.m. on Prime Ticket.
