Raymond Kappe, founder of the Southern California Institute of Architecture (SCI-ARC), has been awarded the 1990 Topaz Medallion for Excellence in Architectural Education.

The award, jointly sponsored by the American Institute of Architects and the Assn. of Collegiate Schools of Architecture, recognized Kappe’s efforts for “founding a school that was lively and productive and established high standards in the teaching of architecture.” The school was established in 1972, in vacant industrial buildings in Santa Monica.

A practicing architect since 1953, Kappe has received more than 20 design awards for his residential and commercial architecture.
