John McEnroe, making his first tournament appearance since an opening-round loss at Wimbledon, defeated Paul Chamberlin, 6-2, 6-3, in a second-round match of the Sovran Bank Classic at Washington, D.C.

The third-seeded McEnroe did not face a break point until the final game of the match and he broke Chamberlin in the sixth game of each set.

“I felt I played pretty well,” McEnroe said. “I’m eager to try to play my best, my absolute best. I feel my game coming along, but it takes time.”

Said Chamberlain: “We both played bad. I think (McEnroe) needs to do more with his court preparation and focus back on his game.”

McEnroe’s last tournament victory came against Brad Gilbert March 5, 1989, in the WCT finals at Dallas.

In other matches, defending champion Tim Mayotte scored a 6-2, 6-1 victory over India’s Ramesh Krishnan. Second-seeded Brad Gilbert advanced to the third round with a 6-1, 7-5 decision over Eliot Teltscher.
