The Region : EPA Asked to Fight Landfill

Share

Rep. David Dreier (R-La Verne) has called on the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to intervene against the expansion of the controversial Azusa Land Reclamation Co. landfill.

Citing potential contamination of the San Gabriel Valley’s underground water supply, Dreier told EPA Regional Administrator Daniel W. McGovern that the federal agency should speak out against the plan.

In a letter to McGovern dated Monday, Dreier said he is troubled that the EPA has not reviewed technical evidence that suggests the landfill already is “a major source of contamination to the ground water beneath the site.”

Landfill officials have repeatedly disputed this charge, which has been part of a legal debate that is continuing over state permits needed to allow the expansion.

Terry Wilson, a spokesman for the regional EPA office in San Francisco, said Wednesday that the agency had no comment because Dreier’s letter has not been received by McGovern.
