THE SIDELINES : Skoff Beats Top-Seeded Gomez
Horst Skoff of Austria upset top-seeded Andres Gomez 7-5, 0-6, 6-4 today to advance to the quarterfinals of the Mercedes Cup.
Gomez, the French Open champion and the fifth-ranked player in the world, rallied after losing the first set to win six games in a row and even the match.
But the 16th-seeded Skoff regained his composure and broke Gomez to clinch the decisive set at the clay court tournament.
Third-seeded Emilio Sanchez of Spain dropped a set to Richard Fromberg but recovered to win the match.
No. 12 Henri LeConte of France beat No. 5 Andrei Chesnokov of the Soviet Union 7-5, 6-3.
