From Times Staff and Wire Service Reports

Two suspects in the shooting death of a West Covina man will either be booked for the slaying or eliminated as suspects by early next week, West Covina police said Friday. Paul Watkins, 21, and Lucian Martin, 18, were arrested Tuesday in connection with an unrelated armed robbery of a Gardena market. They were being held in Los Angeles County Jail in lieu of $75,000 bail each, Gardena Police Lt. Jeffery Finley said. Investigators are “still working on evidence to try to make sure we’ve got the right guys” before booking the two for the slaying, West Covina Police Lt. Darrell Myrick said. Raymond Garrett Shield was gunned down Tuesday morning in front of a Holiday Inn as his wife, daughter and two grandchildren looked on. A truck Watkins and Martin were later found driving fit witnesses’ descriptions of the getaway vehicle used in the killing, Myrick said.
