Cal Ripken Jr. hopes that somebody will notice that he is a pretty good fielder.

He had to go an extra inning Friday at Baltimore to break the major league record for consecutive errorless games by a shortstop. He fielded flawlessly for the 89th game, since making an error April 13, as the Orioles beat the Chicago White Sox, 3-2, in 10 innings.

Ripken, who broke the record set by Kevin Elster of the New York Mets, also scored the tying run in the seventh after reaching on an error by shortstop Ozzie Guillen.

Randy Milligan, given a second chance, singled home Phil Bradley with two out in the 10th inning to win the game .

Bradley was on first when Milligan hit a high pop foul that White Sox first baseman Carlos Martinez misjudged and let drop.

Bradley stole second and later scored on Milligan’s line drive to left. It made a loser of White Sox bullpen ace Bobby Thigpen, who deserved to be out of the inning.

Ripken, often lauded for his hitting, has led the league shortstops in assists for five years in a row.

“I sure hope someone will finally give me credit for at least being an adequate shortstop, not a guy out of position,” Ripken said.
