Harness Driver Ross Hayter Dies

Ross G. Hayter, a top harness-racing driver who had won more than 2,400 contests during a 25-year career, has died.

Hayter, 49, of Media, died Friday of cancer at Crozer-Chester Medical Center. He was a native of Crediton, Ontario.

Hayter won about $10 million in purses and raced until December. In his last season, he won nearly 100 races, an average of one per night.

Hayter was a five-time driver champion at Brandywine Raceway near Wilmington, Del., and a two-time champion at Liberty Bell Park in Philadelphia. Both parks are now closed.
