A Summer Camp for the Teen-Agers

A resounding cheer among youngsters as summer begins is, of course, “School’s out!”

But after a few weeks of freedom from algebra and spelling bees, that cheer often turns to “What are we going to do today?”

Here’s an idea: Head down to the Barranca Vista Center in Ventura for “Summer Teen Blast ’90.”

The Ventura Department of Parks and Recreation is offering youths ages 12 to 17 the chance to join friends for free drop-in activities from 2 to 6 p.m. weekdays through Aug. 24.

Two coordinators will supervise softball, arts and crafts projects and table games and other activities.

“The big one is volleyball, but we try and adapt the program to whatever the kids want to do,” said recreation coordinator Jenise Rosene.

“Parents like the idea of the kids getting out and exercising instead of watching TV all day,” she said.

The program, which attracts 15 to 20 participants a day, also offers excursions to amusement parks in Southern California.

Scheduled Aug. 10 is a trip to Magic Mountain. A $20 fee includes transportation and entrance to the park.

The center is at 7050 E. Ralston St., Ventura.
