New Tarzana Post Office Ready to Open for Business

Share

The U. S. Postal Service’s new Tarzana post office at Yolanda Avenue and Burbank Boulevard will open for business Monday at 8:30 a.m.

The post office is more than five times bigger than the one it replaces, a 25-year-old post office in the 18600 block of Clark Street with scant room for its employees to sort mail.

The Clark Street office had 509 post office boxes and only 10 parking places.

The new office has 2,500 boxes and parking for 49 public vehicles, 49 employee vehicles and 37 postal vehicles, Postal Service spokesman John Conte said.

The facility also has a drive-through lane for mail deposits, a self-service postal center and a bulk-mail acceptance unit with an outdoor scale for weighing mail.

It is completely accessible to the disabled, Conte said.

The Tarzana post office handles about 34.5 million pieces of mail each year and has 24 mail routes in an eight-square-mile area, he said.

Construction of the facility was delayed for more than a year because of 1988 federal budget cuts that chopped $1.2 billion from Postal Service funds.

The cuts forced 74% of the Postal Service’s planned construction projects to be scaled back or postponed.
