Dunston Triples His Pleasure Against Expos

In the days of artificial turf and large fielding gloves, the triple has almost become extinct.

But for one game, at least, Shawon Dunston of the Chicago Cubs revived the exciting play.

Dunston tied a modern-day record with three triples Saturday night at Montreal, including one in the three-run ninth that enabled the Cubs to break a tie and beat the Expos, 10-7.

The last player to hit three triples in a game was Houston’s Craig Reynolds, in 1981.

Dunston, who drove in five runs, had a two-run triple in the ninth after getting three-base hits in the fifth and sixth innings. He went into the game with two triples this season.

“Boy, he can fly,” Manager Don Zimmer of the Cubs said. “It is one of the most exciting plays, especially when you get someone who can run that way.”
