A 7-year-old bicyclist remained hospitalized Sunday after he was hit by a car, authorities said.

Daniel Cruz of La Habra was taken by helicopter to UCI Medical Center in Orange shortly after the collision about 8:15 p.m. Saturday, La Habra police said. The boy suffered internal injuries and massive trauma to one leg and was scheduled to undergo surgery late Saturday night, Lt. Joe Milazzo said. Hospital officials, however, declined to discuss the boy’s condition Sunday.

Witnesses told investigators that the boy was traveling south on Ipswich Street on a 15-speed Huffy bicycle shortly after dusk Saturday when he rode into the path of a Ford Pinto traveling west on Keene Street, Milazzo said.

The speed of the car had not been determined Sunday, but witnesses told investigators that there were no lights operating on the bike or reflectors at the time of the crash. Police said there were no traffic signals or stop signs at the intersection of the two residential streets.

The driver of the Pinto, a 77-year-old La Habra man, was not cited pending further investigation, Milazzo said.
