Plan Seeks to Rid Brush as Fire Hazard

Share

To reduce the severe fire hazard in Buck Gully and Morning Canyon, the Fire Department has required homeowners there to remove overgrown vegetation.

The area has grown thick with brush from large amounts of water runoff from lawns and gardens. Officials hope to return the area to its natural state.

“This is not an order to denude the land, but rather a request to reduce the amount of burnable material, and yet retain the existing native vegetation,” Fire Chief James Reed said in a recent letter to residents.

Residents have until Aug. 22 to comply with the measure. The yards of residents who don’t comply will be declared a public nuisance and the residents will be billed for cleanup costs.

Reed said residents should also maintain spark arresters on their chimneys, keep roofs free of combustible materials and plant fire-resistant vegetation where possible.
