Funds Urged for Lake Cleanup

Share

A Los Angeles City Council committee recommended Monday that the city contribute $50,000 toward the cleanup of vegetation in Machado Lake in Harbor City. City officials say the vegetation is choking life from the lake and promoting the breeding of mosquitoes.

At the request of Councilwoman Joan Milke Flores, who represents the area, the Arts, Health and Humanities Committee agreed that the city should supplement $200,000 in state funds already set aside for the cleanup. Flores said bids to remove the vegetation exceeded the state allocation by about $50,000.

Underwater vegetation blankets about 10 acres of the lake at Harbor Regional Park near Harbor College. Officials said the vegetation reduces water circulation and limits the movement of mosquito-eating fish.

The committee’s recommendation was forwarded to the City Council, which is expected to vote on the issue in the next few weeks.
