Darryl Strawberry broke out of a slump with a two-run homer and an RBI single and Frank Viola became the first National League pitcher to win 15 games as the New York Mets beat the Montreal Expos 5-1 today.

Strawberry, who was 0-for-18, snapped a 1-1 tie with a run-scoring single off Dennis Martinez (7-8) during a two-run sixth inning, then slammed his 26th homer in a three-run eighth.

Viola (15-5) allowed six hits, struck out seven and walked one in pitching his sixth complete game for the East Division-leading Mets.

Howard Johnson began New York’s rally in the sixth with a one-out single against Martinez, who had blanked the Mets on three hits over the first five innings. Johnson stole second as Dave Magadan struck out.

Gregg Jefferies then drove in Johnson with a triple before Strawberry singled, making it 2-1.

Kevin McReynolds also homered for the Mets in the eighth.
